How to Draw a Mouth and Lips: Step by Step:

Art Materials Used: 4B pencil, blending stump and/or eraser

Draw a line with two gentle bumps either side of its middle, this is the middle line of the lips.

Draw the top line with two bumps and a bottom line, as a smooth curve. We now have the basic shape of a mouth.

Don’t let the lines touch each other at the corners, it is good to not have points at the corners of a natural mouth, so the lips look like they could move.

Partly erase your lines, this is so we can draw realistic lips, where all the edges are gentle.

Draw some darker curved details on the centre line of the lips.

Add a thin dark shadow under this line.

Slowly build up small graded areas of shading, using a dark 4B pencil.

Use the side of the pencil to shade a mid-tone on the top lip.

Shade some mid-tone along the base of the bottom lip.

Start to add some smaller areas of shading, using a graded tone, dark to light, so the mouth looks more realistic.

You could smudge any lines that are too heavy with the side of an eraser.

You could use a blending stump to smudge the tones too, or an eraser.

The aim is to use smudging as a way of drawing, to blend the tone you have.

Repeat this process by drawing more tone and then blending the tone.

Use the side of a pencil to draw a faint tone of shading on the skin around the lips.

Use a blending stump or eraser to soften the shading on the mouth.

Draw some fine lines and blur the lip edges with your finger.
