9 easy ways to clean a dirty oven

Have you ever used a powerful oven cleaner?

Then you’ll be familiar with the chemical smell and the nasty fumes it releases. This can’t be good for your health, right?

Luckily, you don’t need any chemical-ridden oven cleaners to clean your dirty oven.

There are much easier and cheaper solutions and some of them are healthier too.

We’ve put together a list of the nine easiest ways to clean your oven.

Some are very powerful, while other solutions are a lot milder.

1. Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide

Mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide and a bit of dish soap.

Create a thick paste out of these ingredients and rub this onto the dirty parts of your oven.

Leave this to sit for a while and then spray some white vinegar on top. Use rubber gloves and a brush or cloth to scrub the oven clean.

2. Pumice stone

Simply use a pumice stone and some warm water. That way, you won’t have trouble with damaging fumes or soap residue that gets left behind in your oven.

This can start to stink when you turn your oven back on, which is not what you want, of course.

3. Bathroom cleaner

A lot of bathroom cleaners come in the form a foamy spray. These are meant to remove limescale and soap residue, but they work great against grease as well!

Spray it into the dirty oven and leave it to sit and soak for a couple of hours before scrubbing the oven clean.

4. Ammonia and garbage bags

To clean baking trays and oven racks, you can fill a sturdy garbage bag with ammonia and water.

Put the oven rack and/or baking tray inside the bag and let this soak for about an hour.

Open the bag (use a mask or a tea towel against the fumes) and thoroughly rinse the tray or rack with water.

5. Boiling water

Bring a pot of water up to a boil and immediately put this in the oven when it’s bubbling profusely.

Close the oven and let the steam do its work. Let it steam for an hour and then clean the oven with a cloth.

6. Baking soda and vinegar

Create a paste of baking soda and liquid dish soap. If needed, you can dilute it with water so it’s easier to spread the paste. Using an old cloth or sponge, rub the paste all over the oven.

Mix a cup of water with a cup of vinegar, put this in a spray bottle and then spray this mixture onto the baking soda paste. Let is sit and soak for ten minutes and then clean it with an old cloth or paper towels.

7. Baking soda and vinegar #2

Mix baking soda and vinegar and create a paste. Apply this paste to your oven and let it sit overnight. Clean it the next day.

8. Ammonia

Put a bowl of ammonia into the oven and leave it there overnight. Clean the oven the next day.

9. Orange peel and apple cider vinegar

Put apple cider vinegar and orange peel into a spray bottle. Let this sit and soak for four days to activate it properly.

Sprinkle baking soda into the oven and spray the orange/apple cider vinegar mixture onto it. Let this sit and soak for 20 to 30 minutes and then clean it.
